Apple highlights how England Rugby uses iPads and Macs to analyze live match data

Apple has kicked off a new campaign, titled Apple at Play, showcasing how England Rugby uses Apple devices for in-game analysis. Watch it below.

Apple at Play highlights England Rugby’s use of iPads and Macs

Right on time for this year’s Men’s Six Nations Championship, the Apple UK YouTube channel has published an interesting look at how England Rugby uses Macs and iPads to analyze matches in real time.

In the video, Senior Team Analyst Joe Lewis walks through how live data and video are collected, clipped, and shared instantly with coaches during games, helping inform in-game and halftime adjustments.

As Lewis explains it:

Within the box, we have two analysts, five coaches, seven video angles, hundreds and thousands of data points. (…) We would break that down into individuals as well: how many times they’re carrying, how effective their carrying is, how many meters they make, how many tackles they’ve made, how many missed tackles. (…) All the seven laptops are linked up. (…) Exactly the same thing gets fed down onto the bench. The iPads get used to draw their attention to certain things.

The video also features behind-the-scenes looks inside the changing room, showing how analysts brief players under tight time pressure at halftime.

Even if rugby’s not your thing, the video is a cool behind-the-scenes look at what in-game analysis actually looks like, and the pressure that comes with it.
